Project 5

So I spent my first 15 months back in the hobby being very controlled with my projects, trying to make sure I only bought stuff I would actually use, concentrating on Fantasy games.

Then when Christmas rolled around I put The Silver Bayonet and the box of Riflemen on my wish list thinking it was time to branch out.  You’ll have seen that I have had a lot of fun preparing for it, but I just can’t seem to motivate myself to get it on the table.  No reflection on Joseph McCullough, but actually the same thing happened with Rangers of Shadowdeep.  I bought the book, rolled up my squad, and that was it, just kept playing Five Leagues instead.

I was beginning to think it was me avoiding getting confused over a different set of combat rules, but that can’t be it as I took to GoTT okay and I’ve playtested some stuff from other stables without trouble, so I think it might be that a published and prescribed scenario stifles me? In fact if it hadn’t been Christmas the urge to play TSB probably would have passed without incident.  I did have a similar flirtation with Cthulhu mythos but let it set awhile and it passed.

I do want to branch out though and really had to think it through.  Next up was sci-fi, I flirted with a 5 Parsecs campaign (5LB in space though, nah), Napoleonics (painting 32 riflemen all the same did for that), a space SWAT type thing based on Babylon 5 (even worked out how I would kitbash Narn, Mimbari and Centauri, but then lost interest again), and Graham sent me 0200 Hours to play with (but WWII doesn’t float my boat, no idea why, I just immediately starting thinking how I could adapt that game to something else).

Eventually it hit me.  Favourite books include Damnation Alley, Day of the Triffids, The Postman.  I hate Zombie stuff but these classic post apocalyptic ideas were rolling around in my head so I picked up Five Klicks From The Zone.  Then I got chatting about it with Ivan.  Then I started to think about where I wanted to take it.  Now I’m in.  Hip deep. Plus it’s officially project 5, so here we go!

Nothing to show yet.  The SAS figures from the 0200 Hours starter set will work great for my Squad exploring the Outlands as they try to keep some semblance of civilisation going.  I’ve got some Copplestones figures coming for badguys, and the Wargames Atlantic alien Harvesters will fit in nicely, so this is going to be a blast!
